Being mentally healthy is not just about not having a mental disorder.  A person can live with a mental disorder and still experience emotional well-being resulting in a balanced and satisfying life.  The reverse is also true: the absence of a mental disorder is no guarantee of emotional well-being. Like being in good physical health, being in good mental health makes you feel good about yourself.  It also allows you to fully enjoy the joys of life, to flourish and to try new things. Mental health is determined by a series of socioeconomic, biological and environmental factors. There are cost-effective intersectoral strategies and interventions to promote, protect and recover mental health . Mental health is an essential component of health.  The WHO Constitution defines health as follows: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”.  This definition has the important corollary that mental health is more than the absence of mental disorders or disabilities.
